DeWalt 18-volt battery packs are the foundation of every DeWalt’s portable unit. There is no doubt that DeWalt makes some of the best 18-volt batteries on the market. DeWalt 18v battery packs can be used in any existing 18v DeWalt cordless tools. And these power tools can use either NiCad or Li-Ion battery packs, so users can upgrade the battery if desired. Li-ion technology is viewed as the key to the success of the cordless power tool systems. These battery packs are lightweight, but are capable of providing a great amount of power when they are fully recharged. So you should stop using a battery pack as soon as you feel a substantial decrease in power from your cordless unit. Li-Ion batteries are made up of a series of individual cells (one cell has 1.2v) connected together. So an 18v battery pack has 15 battery cells. Also, DeWalt 18v Li-Ion batteries have no memory effect. The cadmium in a NiCad battery pack is the bigger problem and why Li-Ion battery pack is much better. And if you leave battery pack on a charger – no harm has done. The DeWalt chargers feature a maintenance mode which allows battery pack to remain in the charger, maintaining a fully charged battery until you are ready to work. Also, if the 18v DeWalt battery pack is left outside the battery charger, they will not discharge like NiCad or NiMH battery packs. It is good to know that if both Li-Ion and NiCad battery packs are too hot (1050F or higher) or too cold (below 400F), the battery packs will not take a full charge. So if the temperature in the charging area is too hot or too hot the batteries will suffer a permanent loss of runtime. This is all due to a negative chemical reaction.

You can also charge DeWalt 18v battery pack with an automotive charger. But you can not use it to charge 24-volt and 36-volt battery packs. The process of recharging 18v battery packs will take about an hour. There are some quick chargers on the market but they are usually more expensive. They can fully recharge the battery pack in 15 minutes. These chargers use the DeWalt’s three stage charging process. And when it comes to the quality of these charging units it is good to know that they are as good as standard 1-hour battery chargers. They will fully recharge the battery pack without causing any sort of damage to the cells. Also, remember that not all chargers are made equal. A great majority of DeWalt battery packs chargers are designed to handle the variations in voltage and current delivered by generators.

Once the battery is fully charged you will notice that it is hot. That is totally okay. But the battery should not be too hot for you to hold it in hand. If that thing happens you have a slight problem. In that case it is better to consult the DeWalt service department. Their chargers and batteries come with a warranty so you do not have to worry.
