Makita 2012NB 12-Inch Planer with Interna-Lok Automated Head Clamp

I purchased this corded Makita power tool to replace my old Hitachi planer on the work site. Couple of years ago I was amazed with the Hitachi, but the 2012NB 12-inch planer has really raised the bar in my opinion. I have only had the 2012NB power tool for one year and I am very satisfied with it. It is my second corded power tool of this kind I have owned, and without the doubt one of the best models on the market today. I chose this model based on my good experience with Makita’s machines. All I was searching for was a sturdy and compact power tool for various applications. A great majority of users are quite satisfied with the features on the 2012NB. I found that the ease of use is coolest feature, particularly after having some issues with the Hitachi power planer.

This Makita planer also features smooth and nicely designed controls, high-performance motor that delivers same amount of power no matter what load you put on the planer. That was not the case with my old Hitachi power planer. And after working for two hours without a break with the oak stock, the motor housing only just felt a bit hot. The reason for this is because it has a bigger fan and housing than the Hitachi power planer. It is also good to know that the Makita planer features a no snipe lock. And this is a great thing. The 2012NB planer is designed and developed to extremely tight tolerances and the materials used are top quality. This just proves that the best materials and craftsmanship are all you will ever need. This machine comes with a durable, one-piece aluminum top for maximum precision. It is well cast and superbly designed. The top is flat allowing the stock to be stacked on the unit during the application.

The unit is light weight; weighs only slightly less that the other power planers on the market (only 68 pounds) and compact (measures 19-1/64 inches by 30-3/8 inches by 15-25/32 inches).  It comes with top carry handles and disposable carbide knives. And once you try it you will never want to go back sharp-able steel knives. It is good to know that the process of changing blades is very simple. The blades last much longer than standard steel blades. You can run a stock through with tiny nails and the blade will not be damaged. And standard blades cost in a longer run.

The cutter head is very well machined as well. It is manufactured out of steel. And some models are using aluminum cutter heads. These models are not as durable and sturdy as the 2012NB Makita planer.

Overall, this is a top quality power tool. It is easy to use and very durable. You will have one for many years. It features a quick blade change system. And if you need a power planer that will do the job well this Makita planer is a right tool for you. Just remember; this piece of woodworking equipment is not for everyone. It costs around $850 and it is meant for true professional carpenters and some serious DIY enthusiasts.
